Wellness Check-ups Q & A

What is a wellness check-up?

Even when we feel healthy, it’s important to have regular doctor visits in order to check on our health. With children, it’s also important to regularly monitor their developmental progress.

A wellness check-up is a regularly scheduled visit for your child with their doctor in order for them to ensure their health, check for diseases or conditions, and discuss their well-being. Another reason for the wellness check-up is so your child’s doctor has an opportunity to monitor their progress and ensure that they’re developing normally.

How often should my child have a wellness check-up?

Since they are growing and changing so quickly, children, especially young children, should have wellness check-ups more often than adults. The team at Lapeer Pediatrics recommends wellness check-ups 2-3 days after birth, at two weeks, one month, two months, four months, six months, nine months, a year, 15 months, 18 months, and two years.

Once your child is 2 years old, they should get a wellness exam every year, unless otherwise recommended by the team at Lapeer Pediatrics. If you have any questions about your child’s health, your child’s wellness check-up is a great opportunity to have them answered.

What can I expect to happen at my child’s wellness check-up?

Each wellness check-up will be done in a similar fashion, although there will be slight differences based on your child’s age. The team at Lapeer Pediatrics will do a thorough physical exam of your child, checking their height, weight, and vitals. They will also check their vision and hearing in addition to their reflexes. They will look for any diseases or abnormalities that might need attention and record any developmental changes.

The team will also be able to assess your child’s emotional well-being, and discuss how they are doing at school, with friends, and at home. The wellness check-up is an opportunity for the team at Lapeer Pediatrics to speak with your child about their social and emotional state and discuss any problems they might be having in school or elsewhere.
